the rhythm of your breath

written bysquish team2 min read

coming back to center

whenever the world feels too loud or too fast, your breath is there to bring you back. it is the bridge between your mind and your body, the constant rhythm that grounds you in the present moment.

sometimes, the world feels so heavy that even breathing feels like a chore. that tightness in your chest? that's a physical manifestation of the mental load you're carrying. it's a common pain point for those of us living in a high-pressure environment.

a simple breathing exercise: the 4-7-8 technique

this is a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system. if you're feeling overwhelmed, try combining this with the art of doing nothing.

  1. exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
  2. close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a count of four.
  3. hold your breath for a count of seven.
  4. exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.
  5. repeat the cycle four times.

breathing throughout the day

you don't need a special pillow or a quiet room to breathe. you can do it while waiting in line, while driving, or while sitting at your desk. every conscious breath is a small homecoming.

at squish, we encourage you to use your breath as an anchor during our mindful check-ins. if you're feeling stuck or scattered, take one deep breath and let us know how you're doing.

every conscious breath is a small homecoming.

reflections & clarity

why does breathing help with anxiety?

deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which signals to your brain that you are safe and can relax.

how long should i practice the 4-7-8 technique?

you only need to do it for about four cycles. it's very effective and very fast.

can i do this anywhere?

yes, that's the beauty of it. it's completely silent and can be done in any situation.
